What is JOTA/JOTI ?

JOTA-JOTI (Jamboree on the Air-Jamboree on the Internet) is the world’s largest Scout event taking place every year in October on the Internet and over the airwaves.

JOTA-JOTI aims to support young people of all ages to learn about communications technology, the values of global citizenship, and their role in Creating a Better World. It’s a travel-free Jamboree that fosters international friendships, promotes learning about other cultures, and encourages young people to think globally and act locally.

JOTA-JOTI returns to Camp Cottermouth 20/23 October 2023 with a full weekend of exciting and challenging activities for you and your Unit.

What activities are planned?

Note :  All youth members must be accompanied by a leader, Adult helper or Parent. The Radio Team have a primary focus on the Radio Program they are delivering.

At Camp Cottermouth

  • Camp Opens 17:00 Friday to 15:00 Sunday 

On Saturday and Sunday Units will rotate between:

  • Amateur radio with the Radio Team

    • /Monitoring/Operating JOTA Frequencies 10/15/20/30/40 Meters
    • 2 Meter Repeater on Mt Ginni 
  • Internet cafe including webchat, Minecraft and streaming

  • Codes and signals

  • Radio challenges with the 4WD Team

  • Construction with the Pioneering Team

  • Fox hunts and Battleships
  • International and World Scouting

There will also be an Opening Parade Friday evening, and a Closing Parade Sunday afternoon.

At Lake Tuggeranong Sea Scout Hall

  Opens 15:00 Saturday and closes 15:00 Sunday

  • Radio Communication on 20m/40M HF SSB Scout to Scouts
  • 20m Slow Scan TV (Transmitting images via HF)
  • Morse Code
  • Battleships

At Mt Mugga Scout Hall

Friday Night (20th) 7pm - 10pm Rovers and Vernturers (only) Welcome - testing and tuning up
Saturday (21st) 8am - 10pm Drop in Program
Sunday (22nd) 10am-10pm Drop in Program

Displays and Radio Activities

Radio: HF and DMR/VHF/UHF

HF
  * Will monitor and use JOTA Frequencies - propogation should be good.
  * Will run FT8, FT4 and JS8Call
  * Will attempt to have big screen showing interesting videos and/or Gridtracker/digital mode information
 
VHF/UHF
* One radio on Isaacs Ridge - DMR repeater - JOTA Global TGs.
* One radio monitoring Ginini/2m repeater

Remote Radio Setup/Display: 817, Mag loop antenna, longwire
* Display showing how an FT817 can be taken hiking
* SOTA display also

Solar Panel Battery
* Will setup my solar panels and battery and run a radio off of them - to show the off grid nature of Amateur radio.

How can my Unit participate?

Camping

Units wishing to camp for the weekend at Cottermouth will need to organise their own campsites and food. Camping bookings are to be made directly with Camp Cottermouth via https://www.campcottermouth.com.au/contact/

Units can also attend as day visitors on Saturday or Sunday.

Apart from the events at Camp Cottermouth. There will be opportunities to visit JOTA Radio Stations set up at other Scout Halls. 

Cost:

Camping and Catering

  • Units are responsible for their own Camping and Catering costs.
JOTA/JOTI Activities
  • For Units camping at Camp Cottermouth, $15 for all participants, to cover the cost of Activities, including an event badge. 

  • For Day Visitors to Camp Cottermouth $10 to cover activities and the Badge
  • If You are attending one of the Scout Hall based Radio Stations the cost will be $5 covering the cost of the Badge. 

  • We will invoice the Group based on the numbers after the event

How can I help?

The JOTA-JOTA Organising Committee (JJOC) is seeking youth members, Leaders and Adult Helpers to assist with activities bases, as well as administration, setting up, and packing down.

We are also seeking Venturer Scouts or Rover Scouts interested in event planning and management to help deliver the event. This could be used toward a Special Interest Area badge  .

How do register my Unit?

Registrations will open until the 14th October

Registrations are to be done through Operoo on a unit basis, whether you intend camping or just day visiting at either Camp Cottermouth or one of the Scout Hall RadioStations. It will also be necessary to sign the log sheet at the site you are attendingin order to get the Badge.
